Some things never change

Some things never change

A Poem by willweb

I was walking down a street

in my past, hating my bright future,

thinking about you

(How many years ago was it,

20, 25, when you said

you’d never speak to me again)

Not much traffic in these days,

the crossing guards

were not busy at all

Saw a kid with a transistor radio

playing the new Beatle’s single,

that was our song

Stopped at a payphone,

checked the coin return and found a quarter -

maybe my luck was changing

Placed it in the larger

round opening at the top

and dialed you a text message

But got an operator instead -

and in that snooty tone

I had all but forgotten, cackled,

“She still doesn’t want to talk to you”

Some things never change

connection broken and not returning....sad--but true in this poem about you.

Letting go and moving on, it's hard Will. Keep your chin up friend...

Ouchie, that has to hurt but you have a hint of wittiness in this one. I loved it... Moving on can be so difficult Will, sometimes, we never do.

Why is it that moving on can be so difficult? Those moments of hope keep a strong hold - best to leave that quarter where you find it next time... Great "back then" imagery in this, Will.

Thanks Rita for your nice comments. Yes, I believe I will leave that quarter alone the next time.
We choose to be ever faithful, and look what it gets us, but another slap in the face! Better go sit in the diner next time, Will...perhaps your luck might change!

Thank you so much Kelly. I'll be in the diner, can I buy you a cup of coffee?

I'd love a cup...save me a seat!!
I felt the downward spiral all the way to the end of the poem. Finding the quarter was novel. I felt like you went back in time with mention of the Beatles on a transistor radio,

we had party lines at home and phone booths were the only superman was our selves .. we put in a dime, actually, and with a simultaneous hit on the hang up lever got a dial tone and the dime back .. i guess i must say ooooooooh those were the days ;) the heavy sadness of your poem is in these lines for me ... it is simply tooooooooooooooooo long to pine wilweb!!! toooooooooooooooo long:
"(How many years ago was it,
20, 25, when you said
you’d never speak to me again)" ... granted one moment of loves sting can seem so long ... for sure
love and flowers

The operator apparently knows nothing about poetry, or he wouldn't have caused this reverie to end!! :)) My favourite lines would be
"Saw a kid with a transistor radio

playing the new Beatle’s single,

that was our song"

Well I used to have hey jude as one of my 'our songs'....
Oh, I shouldn't laugh but I love the humour and wit peppered into this pathetic moment (and you know I mean that as a compliment). If you love something and doesn't come back to you, set it free or something like that... Time to move on you hopeless little cutie pie. Find a new love.
