Matchless

Matchless

A Poem by willweb

You asked if I had a light,

I struck a match (my last)

Watched as it sparked,

began to glow

then ignited in flame

Yellow and white

with a hint of blue

Lit your cigarette

and those of your two friends

Then stared as it

slowly burned

down the cardboard shaft

until I could feel its heat

on my finger tips

Still I gazed

at the beauty

of the flame

till I could

stand it no more,

shook it and the flame was gone

and so were you

Nothing remained but a thin

swirling line of smoke

lazily ascending

to the sky

Three on a match

is supposed to be bad luck -

so what else is new

What a profound piece of metaphor and imagery. Beware the illusion of warmth... Well done, Will.

I adore this metaphor, anticipation gone up in smoke, and bad luck to boot...very clever Will.

Holding a beautiful flame within our hands ignites imagination and wonder, but as said above, when held too long flames will burn. Sometimes we need to let them fizzle out and watch the wisps of smoke follow behind them, less turn into another charred casualty. I really enjoyed this piece from you.

Nicely expressed metaphors -
Love is finicky that way - mesmerizing until it burns.

my pleasure :)I respect your opinion... :)
Sometimes we have to be the 'grown-up' and light our own match, do what WE want. Or, the easier, smarter option is just to stop smoking - simples! :))

I love the metaphor here as well as the reality - when all is said and done, we have to light our own match for ourselves sometimes, I guess, beautifully woven, as always x
