In a drawer (filled with nothing)

In a drawer (filled with nothing)

A Poem by willweb

I found an empty pen today

in a drawer filled with nothing

Hidden behind shattered dreams and ideas,

somewhere in the past

I held it in my hand,

it fit perfectly, felt familiar -

Thought of holding it to a flame

to see if any ink would flow

Then it dawned on me,

it was my pen, the one I used

to write love poetry to you,

day after day, night after night

Affectionate phrases

Telling of how I felt,

how you made me feel - words,

endlessly pouring from my heart

Then it ran dry, barren, lifeless

that day you said good bye

in a poem of your own

left on the counter above this drawer

You were the flame that made my ink run,

the beauty woven into each stanza,

You were my poetry,

my reason to write, the reason -

now there is nothing but an empty pen,

hidden behind shattered dreams and ideas

in a drawer

somewhere in the past

Excellent metaphor, Will. Your images make us feel the emptiness...

Thank you Rita, as long as you don't feel it that long.
Your metaphor was great Will. I really enjoyed this one, this really was perfection Will. I keep thinking you can't beat the poem and each time you prove me wrong.

Thanks so much Cory. I am thrilled you liked this one.
There's so much synchronicity to this write and it is masterfully crafted. Aside from admiring the perfection in the technique, it tells a forlorn tale of lost love using wonderful images that just leave the reader breathless. I think i have said enough. Penny

I love how used the metaphor here to convey your feelings and emotions very clever and unique.
This is truly a nice way to present this and I love this poem!

You are welcome! :)
such original metaphoric lines (can i say metaphoric?) :) ... hope this is not a personal expression like i think it is ... you don't need ink any more! unless of course you want to hit print .. we have powerful inspiration in love and pain .. be well my friend

Thank you so very much E. Yes, the ink was metaphoric and you can say it because I just did.
I like this a lot. Your bitter is similar to my own, but gentler at times, ever so slightly. I would suggest one thing, I wanted to say, "the pen, it felt perfectly familiar." but, as always, the poetic sensibility is yours.:)

I thought you wrote this brilliantly, Will. A great concept that I never would have thought of...expressing it in a past tense as well as the present!

Powerful ending, too!
