A Poem by willweb

The aged branches of a maple stretch across the brick walk,

hand placed blocks in a herringbone pattern

of worn colors and chipped corners

still winding its way, after all of these years -

standing the test of time.

Often we would walk on warm summer nights,

counting fireflies and tossing pine cones

trying to knock another from the tree

You would take my hand and I would think to myself

what would my life be without you

Now as I stroll on this same brick path,

where fireflies are just an annoyance

and pine cones nothing more than something dead

scattered in my way, I realize - I never wanted to know

the answer to that thought at all

At least this walkway stood the test of time

took every step along that walk .. your poem paints a very clear picture and sets the motion going .. what a surprise ending .. leaves me ambivalent .. such a strange feeling for poetic people eh!?

Thank you so very much E. Why I ask these things softens makes me wonder.
You paint brilliant pictures with your imagery Willweb!
Being with that one person can make everything seem beautiful- and when they're gone, that glow leaves with them. The place is the same, but the feeling- the vibe- it's more stale.
Excellent piece :)

I am thrilled you liked this one Ally. Thank you so very much. It does suck being alone.
To revisit what was once a treasured memory only to find it hollow and meaningless is so tragic. But it happens. That's why I try not to walk the path of yesterdays because I don't want more pain. What is said here is true that "I never wanted to know the answer to that thought". Inner pain and loss are like a living hell, but a gift to share with others going through similar experiences. A fine poem. Penny

Thanks so much KLGoode. I am thrilled you liked this one.
Bittersweet and melancholy, your words are heartfelt, Will. No, we really do not want to know what our lives would be like without that special someone. Nothing is quite the same once that person is not in our lives anymore....the sky is not as blue, the pine cones are prickly, and the fireflies are in danger of being swatted by you. Yes, the walkway is still there, but nothing else is the same. Heavy sigh....so lovely. Lydi**
