One way traffic

One way traffic

A Poem by willweb

Lost in the gears

while shifting through life

Highways shave but a few moments,

leaving exits for the lucky ones

Reversed at those missed but

stuck in the never ending congestion

with speed limits ignored,

as is this feeling

traveling through my body

Making left turns in no passing zones,

pausing at intersections

texting at 70,

hoping to meet someone

by accident

Only to collide with reality

on the shoulder of a forgotten dream

Detours lead to him,

where your car is parked

from the night before

And the warning light

on my dusty dashboard

reminds me that I am low on fuel,

as I coast down a dead end road

with no stop signs

On a night of drinking I woke to find myself in a used car lot, empty on gas, slightly hung over, but the day beamed in sunshine, I my breath carried me to my next mistake.

Thanks for the memory!

Regards,
Al

Scary trips in the dark of night or carving a road that shouldn't exist....
Well written!
I must believe it is living in the fast lane.

Maybe a little Noodlehead. :) Thank you always for your nice words to me.
Excellent "Pen Execution" Love the Metaphor

when I read this line "hoping to meet someone by accident"

Gave me an insight That the reason for the whole cause of effect is because whatever we ask for we get.
The accident was sure to happen.
A reminder to be careful what we ask for for we will surely get it :-)

So we should always look bith ways before proceding? Thank you so very much Cryingkate for your nic.. read more
Just when I think I have read the best you have done, out comes another stunning piece ! Leaves me thinking "how come this person has bucketloads of talent and I barely produce one poem a month?!" ugh...anyway...I love the whole theme of this and it works so well in the context of relationships. If we don't heed those warning lights, there will be a consequence. But ya know, living dangerously can be a lotta fun too :) I have found in my life that my instincts are bang on, and when I ignore them, I get into strife. Go with your instinct I say ! Penny :)

Thank you Penny. I'll see if my GPS has an instincts setting. :) Happy you enjoyed this one.
You drove this metaphor at 90 mph clear through to the end...well done Will.

Wow....excellent work...
And the warning light

with no stop signs..........really nice...:)

Thank you so very much Anne.
what a reckless drive through life you have given us! i think these are very clever lines:
"as is this feeling
traveling through my body"
and these:
"hoping to meet someone
by accident"

great use of the metaphor for sure .. puts me in the drivers seat .. long hauls and nights, speed, loneliness and danger .. sad/bad mix

Thanks so much E. for this wild and wonderful review of my work. I am thrilled you liked this one.
You have contrasted brilliantly between driving and life. An excellent poem.
