Another Friday Night

Another Friday Night

A Poem by willweb

The waiter, Joel I think he said,

delivers another drink

It glistens in the fancy glass

I stir it, though I know it doesn’t need it

The couple at the next table holds hands,

we used to hold hands

I sip my cocktail…feeling them now

A group in the corner celebrates a special occasion

I raise my glass to them, they smile

Joel stops by again, “all is good” I say…sort of

Another swallow, as if that will help

My mind wanders back to what I said

How could I have been so stupid?

The votive burns lower, almost out

Bussers clear off the couple’s table

I still can’t believe I was that dumb

The celebrators hug before leaving

Nothing but ice in the glass now

I signal Joel for the check,

as I wonder how many more times

I will remind myself it is my own damn fault…

I’m sitting alone on another Friday night

at a table set for two

Oh this was so sad, Will. I don't think we ever are really alone, we might think we are but there will always be someone who wants to take the other seat... Maybe not the person we wanted.

I love this.
