Paper Cup Wishes

Paper Cup Wishes

A Poem by willweb

In a paper cup of wishes,

fragments of the past swim

like guppies waiting to be eaten

by lost dreams in a vast ocean

Sipping slowly, another swallow

I notice the cup now empty,

with the exception of one

still stuck to the bottom

Tapping the base, it falls to the bar,

wiggles a bit and then dies,

no movement…

Sliding the cup forward, I ask for a refill

With a flick of your finger

what was left of my dreams

falls to the floor, covered now in sawdust

You shove the cup back and answer, no!

the last guppy would have been better off eaten...it's like the last bit of emotion within us wiggles and dies...we get no refill of wishes...once we use them up...they are gone...if we haven't made the best use of them...they disappear into the sawdust of life.
