War Wife

A Story by Willow Stream
"

something I wrote for a project in school

"
My husband left last week for the war. Day in and day out he's always
on my mind. Day after day I wonder if he's alive and making his way
back to me. Take care of the kids, Johnny to soccer practice, Susan to
ballet. Trying to keep my mind of wondering about him. clean the
house, make dinner, give the kids their baths and off to bed with them.
Sit down in the living rooms and turn the tv on. Turn to the news to
see what is progressing with the war. Still going on. I sigh and turn
the tv off and get ready for bed. check on the kids before i crawl into
bed. I lay awake and try to sleep missing my husband beside me. I sleep
for a few hours then I'm up again to get the kids breakfast together. A
knock on the door. I give the kids there cups and go to answer the
door. Standing there is a man in uniform. I ask what i can do for him
and he hands me an envelope. Fear courses through me and i hesitate to
open the envelope but i have to. Ever so slightly the envelope is
opened and i read what i dread. My world crashes around me and i
collapse to the ground. I will never have my husband by my side again.
