Winter's Bone

Winter's Bone

A Poem by William Paris

There’s a bird outside
Sittin’ lanely allein ane the wire
Ane ‘ees no singin’
Tae cald tae be a crier
Dreich ane bitter
The cloud ane the blaw
Snaw blawin sideways
Seems tae gae on ane aw
Ane with it
As frozen tae ah bone
Sits ma heart
Ah still as the stone
God, I dae miss her
Each ane every part
But we’re sae broken
Dinnae even know how tae start
Winter’s night sae crisp
Ane sae clear
But nae stars are shinin’
Ane ma whiskey hold nae cheer
God, if ah could fix us
With words as kind as can be
God, if ah could fix us
She’d see a new me
Nae moment will hold us
Nae wind in her hair
Nae walks in the heather
Ah God, ma heart is so sair
Seems like I’d take it
Her love, just ah speck
Instead I feel like
Tis a noose on ma neck
So stare at the birdie
Sittin’ aw landely allein ane the wire
So cald is the weather
Nae warmth or nae fire
Without her tae hold me
The cold’ll not postpone
Instead it’ll leave my heart frozen
As still as the stone
