![]() A Quick Dip Into The Enticing RiverA Story by William Lawrence![]() This is an experience I had last summer on a local nature trail![]()
I walk down the riverside listening to the gentle wind; I follow it. I feel as free as a bird and the birds seem to think I'm one of their kin. Sometimes I feel I might be part bird. I continue walking. I look into the body of water and can see my reflection staring back, it waves at me even though I have no recollection of waving at all. I then feel the wind begin picking up. It’s now stronger and pointing into the water. I feel that the wind is asking me, almost urging me --to hop in. I decide to follow it. I sit down on the tall grass along the riverside and begin taking off my shoes and socks. I set them beside me. The voice of the wind begins singing a beautiful tune to me, so I join in. I then lower my feet to the water letting only the soles of my feet make patterns into the water. It’s cold. I then see a small group of blackbirds fly past me and up into a nearby tree. I watch as they effortlessly land onto different branches then begin talking to one another. It reminds me of a movie I once saw called "The Wizard of Oz." The birds remind me of the flying monkeys in that movie. (I still wonder to this day if they might be important people that just have a spell put on them so that humans can only see them as birds). I can hear their distinct voices but can't quite make out what their saying. Only bits and pieces and certain tones they’re using. Next thing I know I see a few joggers crossing the nearby bridge on the trail (I have full view of them). They can't see me since I'm sitting in the tall grass secretively peering over at them as they run past. Then I hear 3 very loud and very horrifying sounds.... Gunshots! I feel as if I am caught in between time and am in the Vietnam war. I peer through the tall blades of grass looking to see what could have produced such sounds, but see nothing and have no explanation other than it being a gun.
I then feel something bite my foot. I look down and see that the local mosquitoes have found their life source (my foot), so I kick some water around and they fly away, annoyed and distraught. I then notice a quite large spider crawling through the grass beside me. I picture myself being the size of an insect and begin having a vision. I see myself parting through very tall grass and running, I am very scared and running for my life. Finally I come out of the vision and hear the birds in the tree warning me about something. I look over at the bridge and see a park ranger coming across the bridge on his 4-wheeler, so I decide to jump in. I un-button my shirt and take off my pants and set them on top of my shoes, then hop in. Oh my god! Holy s**t! The water is so cold. I begin to swim east (the opposite direction of the bridge). I feel seaweed brushing in between my toes and it tickles. I continue following the wind. I am now shivering and can see my breath on the water like the smoke from a burning incense stick. Now the wind picks up and I am feeling much colder than before. I follow the wind, today it’s my guide. I still feel the seaweed brushing through my toes and on my feet, but this time I picture it being the hair of dead corpses underneath the water on the river floor. The Men and women who died in Vietnam now in their liquid burial never to be found or remembered. I begin to panic. I soon dismiss that thought when I see a couple walking the riverside. I want to swim back, but the wind tells me to just swim past them, so I do. They notice me and keep watching me as I pass by. Their mouths are moving as they look at me and I know I'm the topic of their conversation. I then get a rush of heat all over my body and am very nervous. I refuse to look in their direction, so I just keep swimming, faster and faster, paddling through the cool water like a dog. It’s now been about 5 minutes that I've been in the water, and I am so ready to get out, but the wind seems to want to show me something. "Only a little further" I hear in a kind gentle female voice that brings on euphoria -- so I comply. I swim maybe 2 more minutes and then see that there is nothing on the other side of the river so I decide to get out and walk the riverside back to my clothes. "I can't stay in this water another minute, not another second!!" I thought to myself. So I walked back through the tall grass feeling tired, cold and a little sick. I finally got to my pile of belongings and put my clothes back on. There were about 10 cuts on each foot from god knows what, but I decided that I should head home. © 2016 William Lawrence |
