Square

Square

A Poem by William Coad

Blocks and squares

stripes and lines

perfect boxes that cannot define

It came as a speck

the tiniest spark

adding and adding to itself until sharp.

Building on little lights

and rhyming them too.

Defining the foolish plights

of definitive view.

With that square

block you've got

I'd like to ask what you see

Beyond my mounted

vista on the wall

can you see past the trees?

There was a stretching

shape that spanned

so far across a listless sky

With daffodils

and coloured things

that cannot get you by.

No boxes and squares

lines and shapes

though you understand,

comprehension is what escapes.
