The Island

The Island

A Poem by William Coad

In the middle of a sea

on an island made of pearls

sits a tower made of diamonds

and the heart of a girl.

With a thousand feet

between ground and sky

one needs only look

up to realize

that the person whose heart

in that tower be

is something of remark

and truthfulness and free.

Yet trapped on the island

as waves lap the shore

sits this poor heart

and tower for sure.

And reasons escape her

but sometimes they don't

for nothing is everything

and it's making her choke.

For there is a place

far across the sea

with fields of green grass

and birds which fly free.

Yes, there is a place

which the girl can't see.

A place that is green

and wild and free.
