Space, the Thing that's Between Us

Space, the Thing that's Between Us

A Poem by William Coad

Light

as it flashes

across the electrically lit sky

Waves

as she crashes

across the seas as they writhe

Shadow

as they're cast

over shapes and forms ether

Rain

as it falls

making puddles deeper and deeper.

Watching the water trickle

down the back of your spine.

There's some unseeable beauty

and yet so much futility.

Sky

as it moves

at amazing pace and precision

Music

as it plays

in always the same rhythm

Time

as it passes

without passing us by

Life

and death

as they live side by side

And somehow you were still the one thing

I could not stop watching.

As you kept slowly breathing

and for once I understood the feeling.

Age

as it takes you

eventually breaks you into pieces

Sex

as it holds you

but never let it define you

Space

the name we give

to the nothing between us all

Silence

the name we give

to the nothing between us all.

The water beads dried from your skin

and I watched as you began to swim.

The life slowly left your eyes

left me alone, left me to die-

And the shape that closed behind the door

will never be seen by these eyes before

I can't escape it, I'm begging you please

just don't leave me, don't leave up to my disease.

Black

the colour

behind my eyes.

White

what should be

reflected.

Silence

the sound

you left me with.

Space

the thing

that's between us.
