As I sleep

As I sleep

A Poem by William Coad

I dreamed of a room

and a thousand stars

With whirls of men

and their motor cars.

I dreamed of houses

all pristine and white

lined up so straight

in the scorching light.

And this chimera room-

it filled with black

and people whose faces

were revealed by a crack

in the sun.

I wish I could be there then

I wish I could find my seat...

I ask dear god for that then,

the blinding light and heat,

of the sun.

In my dream I met someone,

both short and small and true,

but more to parts than the sum,

and all those parts were you.

And as I slept

I still did dream

but for you I wept,

'cause it was then

that I learned the truth.

I want to know why did it

have to be that way.

How I could fall in love

with just a wisp

a shade.

It was as we lay

down on the grass

that it dawned on me

What will come to pass.

I held you closer

knowing it would soon

end- I was so sure,

I'd leave you in that room.

As consciousness began to grow

I held on tight

you didn't have to know

I just wanted to get one last moment

with you.

And now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the lord your soul to keep,

hopefully to join me when I sleep

again.

Dear lord- hopefully to join me when I dream again.
