Heartstrings

Heartstrings

A Poem by William Coad

The strings all hang

in a line

sway back and forth

in perfect time.

Let me pull

upon those string.

I'll make the music

you just have to sing.

Watch now so closely

for if you do not,

you may miss this next trick,

my detestable plot.

Let me pull upon your heart strings.

Just lie back and hear the noise.

Let me tear down those red sinuses

for all you girls and boys.

The thing with

the string is

that there is

nothing there.

Not really when

you hear me then

I'll fully ken

If I really care.

I'll pull down,

your heart strings

and you can pull down mine.

Let me pull every

last thread down,

then maybe this will rhyme.

I know the more I pull now,

the more I can pull out.

The more I pull your heart strings

the more you're left in doubt

That your human.

Are you human?

Are we still even here?

With so few strings left

So few things left?

Do we live without peer?

Or for perfection?

Is there anything close.

As I pull your heart strings.

I pull those strings.

And leave nothing but a ghost.

I only have one string left

the rest were all pulled away.

Now to guard against this one last loss,

I'll take your strings today.
