Brave New WorldA Chapter by WilliamClarkWe were moved a border observation post, we did our final inspection before the operation. I grabbed my M16 automatic rifle and put the iron sights under a flame, blackening them so the glare couldn't potentially blind me. I slid a thick and heavy olive green ballistic plate into my front pouch, it weighed a lot and really slowed me down, but it would protect me none the less. I clipped each individual bullet in to my magazine, making sure not miss one. There were about one thousand men stationed here, and eighty men in the company. There were six in my squad. Private Terrance Carried an M60 machine gun, nicknamed "the pig" because of how susceptible to jamming and breaking in combat. It was belt fed, slow and heavy. Both Private Booker and Private Kerrigan carried factory issue M16s, spray painted a dark green to match the local terrain. Specialist Becker, the platoon radioman, carried an Enfield rifle. He had about four magazines, far less than the recommended amount. Private First Class Steph, used an M14, a highly accurate, semi automatic rifle, equipped with a reflex sight for added precision. He was the company's designated marksman. Our mission was to make it to a small radio listening station four miles east of here, and repair a broken antenna. We would also observe enemy movements and report on them. We would take only our squad and would travel to the location on foot. The mission was expected to last two days, throughout that time, we would have four radio checks with command. © 2016 WilliamClark |
