IF THIS IS A MAN II:
ALL THAT REMAINS

IF THIS IS A MAN II: ALL THAT REMAINS

A Poem by Chinedu Ubah

He has changed,
His love has diminshed as we aged
When last we made love, i don't remember
Probably far back in May or September
He breaks my heart in repeated fashion
Paying others his attraction
Night and morning, his fists, my face is engaged
Torturing me, like a test-subject caged

Night and morning I cry
But I can't leave here
Who will take care of my children if I leave here
It is here I shall die

"I shall die here
Every inch of me shall perish
Every single inch
Except one;
An inch;
It is small and is fragile
Hope:
For that all I have to hold on to"
