I was always one step off
Your break-neck pace
Trying to grab the baton,
But it couldn’t find its place.
Just a step too late,
We were too close to see
A situation
Meant to be.
Maybe you saw what I didn’t
And tried to overcompensate
Just because
I didn’t see we could be great.
You were everything
Perfection I couldn’t claim.
Late at night,
I cry as I whisper your name.
I sit up wondering what might have been
Until I go insane
Thinking about that brilliant sunset
That I saw through the rain.
We were the sweet and juicy apple
That sat until it lost its crunch
Like the drinks left out
Of my picnic lunch.
I would pass you in the hallway
You’d smile every time
But still nothing would show me
You wanted to be mine.
I told my self over and over
I didn’t think of you that way
But I sure think about you now
You haunt me each and every day.
You were everything
Perfection I couldn’t claim.
Late at night,
I cry as I whisper your name.
I sit up wondering what might have been
Until I go insane
Thinking about that brilliant sunset
That I saw through the rain.
But then
I waited too long
The walls around my heart
Were just too damn strong.
You finally moved on
To one who was standing by
I couldn’t find my wings
And you were ready to fly
You are everything
Perfection I can’t claim.
Late at night,
I cry as I whisper your name.
I sit up wondering what might have been
Until I go insane
You are the brilliant sunset
And I only bring the rain.
