Newsflash

A Chapter by Austin Jolly

hours pass as the rain continues to plague the streets harder and harder, there was literally no traffic with the exception of a random mail truck every now and then, a suicide mission if you ask me. the streets were a little flooded and there wasn't a sign of blue sky anywhere from where i could see.

I turn to look at Paul, who looked kind of bored as well. couldn't blame him.

"hey, lets see whats on TV, bro" Paul recommends

"Sure thing" i agree. i get up and grab the remote, a simple 13 button dinosaur remote with the channel buttons from 0-9, the power button and the volume buttons. i knew that there was always something good on the news, so i switched to the news channel. a smoking hot news anchor appears on the TV. i immediately turn to look at paul, who was already sitting up on the bed. Jesus Christ, Paul...

He looks at me like i have three heads, "what? this ones sexy!"

"take your eyes off her chest for a single second, will you?" i order

Paul sits there and laughs, because he knows damn well that thats exactly what he was doing. I overhear the word "Genocide" coming out of the TV. i turn up the volume and listen in.

"Shut the f**k up for a minute bro, something about Genocide!" I proclaim.

he instantly stops laughing and sits directly still on the bed, eyes glued to the TV the same way mine were.

the reporter had a slightly concerned look on her face, "...as of July seventh, 2017, US Army Drone Pilot, Sergeant First Class Mason Carter, has reported a large and rather brutal string of genocidal events taking effect in Africa. this has been the 4th confirmed event of genocide in the continent alone as US Army and Marine Corps personnel are being deployed to the scenes in search of African Militia Commander Folami Baas, who was believed to have been the start of the genocidal turn of events. President Parker has authorized the use of deadly force to all US Armed Forces currently deployed in Africa in support of the assassination order placed on the head of Folami Baas. we go live to Jason Song currently in Sierra Leone, reporting for the US Marine Corps at FOB Warhammer."

"Duuuuude....what the fuuuuuck...." I questioned.

Paul interjects, "odds are there's gonna be a couple of Rangers that are gonna take him down. Besides, the navy hasn't been sent to Africa yet, so the Army and Marines over there have a big head start."

it kind of made sense as to what he was saying. They did get there first, they're probably gonna be the ones finishing it. no sense in worrying about it if we have no role in it besides taking the Marines to wherever they gotta go, but that's besides the point. the fact of the matter is that this s**t is gonna keep going on until that Baas guy gets killed. even still it might continue even after Baas died.

"still, we might wanna keep tabs on this. but what if Commander Bishop saw this?" i advise.

"what if Admiral Dawson saw this?" paul counters.

"oh, s**t. what IF he saw this??" i say with a wide look of fear

"dude, he would be all over that s**t. just imagine, news broadcasts, SEALs all over this b***h." paul replies.

"thanks for the vote of confidence, dick. lets just get back to base before we're the first SEALs that high command b*****s at." i steadily advise

"bro, its still pouring a*s raining outside." he complains.

"get in trouble or stay dry, your pick!" i reply.

Paul nods in agreement. I go in the closet to grab my dress whites while he grabs his. luckily my jeep was right there in front of us. we both run out of the room to jump in the car, and hang our whites in the back hangers. i drive to the front office to drop off the keys. im lucky enough my phone didnt fry in my pocket. i jumped back in the car to drive paul back to the wunderBAR parking lot to get his car. a simple five minute drive if it wasnt raining cats and f*****g dogs. with all the rain and fog, i could barely see 3 feet in front of me with constant puddles to the left and right of the car. we're lucky we made it to the lot without flipping or something like that. I parked as close as i could to Pauls car, which wasnt very far at all. He jumped out of the car and into his, leaving his dress whites in my car.

i saw his car start up and pull out, and we were on our way back to base. i felt my phone vibrate for a second, and the bluetooth in my car read the message to me.

"FLASH FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT IN THE CORONADO, CALIFORNIA AREA UNTIL 6:30 PM."

you couldnt have picked a better time to let us know. a******s. i felt my phone vibrate again, this time the bluetooth said "CALL FROM, PAUL."

"Answer" i reply to the bluetooth. paul instantly comes on the phone sounding like hes the most comfortable m**********r in the world.

"yo, man. hows that rain for ya?" he sarcastically answers followed by a laugh of pure intent.

"pretty f*****g good, it provides me the ability to shut you the f**k up when you talk to me like this!" so i made a hard left turn around a gas station with a huge puddle directly below my car as i skidded across the asphalt, making a huge splash of water from the puddle to Pauls car. i straighten out on the road as he comes back behind me, with the rain hitting hard on the windshield and the windshield wipers going at max speed, i could barely hear Pauls voice on bluetooth.

"well, look who the a*****e is right here!" paul insults.

"you had it coming, you definitely had it coming!!" i happily reply.

Paul hangs up the phone while we drive down the flooded streets of Coronado, on our way back to base, our dress whites shifting left and right with every turn i make. about another half a mile down the road, the rain starts to dissipate, and i hear the radio tuning back in with some white noise, followed by a mix up of radio waves, and eventually came back on with the news broadcast, same thing about the genocide in Africa.

I call Paul to have him listen to the woman on the radio. "Dude, it the Africa genocide reporter, listen!" i order.

the woman on the radio spoke about the African genocide with a very serious tone of voice as we zoomed down the flooded street. "Recent report updates on the African genocide has brought the voices and appearance of the United States Navy. Admiral Hatham Dawson, the current chief of staff of the US Navy has instructed all ASEAN units of the US Navys 7th Fleet to provide Naval Gunfire for the supporting elements on the ground as well as in the air, as US Army Rangers and US Navy SEALs make their first appearance in the battlefield of Sierra Leone, Africa. Though we do not know what exactly the US Navy is planning to do with their Special Operators on the ground, the only thing we can imagine as of now is that the US Military will finally put an end to this tyrant, and bring peace among the world, once again."

"f*****g b***h." i think to myself. i turn off the radio as i wait for Paul to start talking.

"DID YOU HEAR THAT!?!?!" Paul screams over the phone. "NAVY F*****G SEALS IN AFRICA!!!!"

"we have to get to base, fast. we gotta know what the f**k is happening." i strongly advise.

i punch the gas pedal as we make our way to the new Navy installation on the beaches of Coronado,  currently being used by SEALs, SOCOM, and SWCC personnel as a command post. I just hope that high command heard about this little newsflash so they can tell us what the hell is gonna happen next...either which way...it cant be good.
