Vampire?A Story by RaeThe expensive office chair moaned under the weight of Cassius as he stretched away from the computer screen. The moonlight from outside shone into his window bespeckled office at the highest floor of the business office. “ Another late night?” Cassius thinks to himself. “ Why do I Work so hard? I’m already a high-powered CEO… Allwell, that gives me an excuse to see Lyric.” A soft tapping noise causes Cassius to jump from his reverie. Cassius clears his throat “Yes?” His mousy assistant enters slowly. “Um, sir?” squeaked his assistant, on the brink of tears “T-T-There’s a strange man here that insists on seeing you. I-I know it’s past hours but he was really assertive and…” “That’s fine Ms. Juniper” Cassius said, cutting off her apology. “let him in.” With a sigh of relief and a look of confusion, Ms. Juniper left the room to bring the strange man to Cassius. “I wonder who it could be?” he whispered to himself. Moments later Ms.Juniper returned with the assertive man. No wonder she was frightened. He was nearly 6ft tall while she was a mere 5. His hair was to his shoulders and carefully slicked back. He wore a black suit with thin white stripes running down it and a fur coat. To be honest he looked like he stepped out of a 1930’s mafia movie, the classic gangster. Cassius stood up and shook the man’s bejeweled hand. “Ms.Juniper you are done for the night. Go home and get some rest.” Cassius announced to his flustered assistant. As soon as he heard the door click shut he averted his gaze to the strange man, whom was now grinning devilishly at him. “I am Daymien and I know what you are.” Daymien said with a look of arrogance all over his features. “And what is that?” Cassius asked with a strong and practiced pokerface. “Why, a vampire of course.” There’s that devilish smile again “And what are you going to do about it?” Cassius replied. “ I have a proposition for you, Cassius” The way the man said his name sent shivers crawling up Cassius’s spine. “You see, I’m the leader of an elite vampire hunting organization. I’ve done my research on you, and I know that you aren’t like the careless vampires one would usually come across.” “What are you trying to say right now?” Cassius demanded. “I’m saying there's a way I can get you out.” Daymien said shrewdly. A million questions and confusion slapped Cassius square in the face. What does this man mean? “I can get you out.” “Sir I’m afraid I have business elsewhere, I’m gonna have to ask you to leave” Cassius said as firmly as he could. The man shrugged and smiled one last annoying smile and backed out of the room, closing the door. Leaving his card cleverly behind. …… Cassius was outside. The cold wind biting his nose and turning his cheeks a light pink. With the flick of his wrist a taxi pulled up next to him. “Where to?” asked the chubby man with an unkempt beard. “Uh, Burgers and Pies please” Cassius said. Butterflies were suddenly very alive in the pit of his stomach “Only the thought of her could do this to me.” Cassius thought knowingly. The image of her fascinating smile spilled into his mind as the taxi driver pulled away from the curb and into the busy road. After what seemed eons, the cab pulled to the side and let him out. He tossed the man his money and was on his way. Alacrity in each step he took. When he walked through the door he was greeted with an array of warm mumblings emanating around him. He picked up a few disparaging words with his keen ears and with small chagrin he ignored it. What could he do? He had an unfair advantage. Now slightly annoyed her made his way through the retro styled dinner. A dime in hand he found his way to the jukebox. Skimming through the old songs his eyes quickly landed on her favorite song, punched in the number and headed to his usual seat. As the Elvis song slowly came to life he saw her peak her head through the kitchen doors. When they first met he had requested this song. She had told him that it was her favorite and so to his own enigma, he found himself vowing to play this song everytime he came in, so she would know he was there. That night when he got home, he spent the night mulling over the matter. What had he been thinking?! He couldn’t be with a human! And yet he finds himself hailing a taxi every other day, requesting to be dropped off at the same place, playing the same song. Her song. Waiting to see the face that exemplifies beauty. Nothing could deter his efforts too see her and he had no idea why. His father certainly wouldn’t condone such behavior…. But he’s not here. © 2017 Rae |
