The Photograph

The Photograph

A Poem by Luna Zerimar

As I'm looking at old photographs,

I find one that amazes me,

It's old & faded,
& it's torn at the corner,

It looks as if someone forgot it,

Folded,
Burned,
& worn out,

It's of a little girl,

She looks to be about seven,
She has a smile across her face,

Pretty,
& she seems to have everything,

I stare at the photo with awe,
& I bring it closer to my view,

i observe the photo carefully,
& let a sigh of sadness escape from my lungs,

I cannot believe what I've come to find,

If I had paid attention at first,
I would've seen it all,

The worry & sadness in her eyes,
The fake smile,
& the low self-esteem,

She has a bruise on her neck,

She probably had nothing,

The photo falls out of my hands,
& I sit there in anger,

How could I not see this?

How could a simple picture trick me?

Self-blame,
guilt,

Why did I bother to look at old photographs anyway?

That is so sad… photographs are meant to bring back memories that the heart holds inside its chambers, but when that memory is one that breaks the heart we need to put them in the back of the photo album as we put it in the past and move on.
