Oops. I guess I deleted this at one point? Ehhh... Thank heavens I had it saved...

One of the most important lessons in life
just so happens to be the most painful....
It's a revolting revelation.
A heart breaking wake-up call,
that yes.
You are powerless.
That yes.
You will fail.

Everyone has been through it,
Or....they will in due time.

You start out full of confidence,
assuring yourself that you're doing the right thing.

Of course your friend will listen;
you'll help them change,
no problem.

We put so much faith and power in that word.
Change.

You know they will.
They'll stop all the drugs.
All the hate.
All the cutting.
All of their destructive ways.

You just have to help them.....
Right?

With a head full of futile thoughts
and a heart brimming with hope....
You try.

We thought ourselves as better people
When in reality.
We were just fools.
Children.
Whom life had not shown all of its sorrows.

So when things slowly crumble
and your friend falls
steadily
deeper into the lifestyle you struggled to save them from...

You blame yourself
Carry the weight of their failures
On your shoulders

What happened?
What did I do wrong?
What more could I have done?
Those thoughts race around your head
Enveloping you.
Consuming you.

The answer is simple.
They didn't change...
Because they didn't want to.

You can't change someone,
No matter how much you care
Or try
Or hope
Or pray

You can't change someone
Who they themselves....
Don't want to change.

Yet - you still try.
You still hang on to the hope
that "yes...yes I can help them."

When it's all said and done.
And everything comes to pass.
All you'll be left with
Is a burning...sinking feeling in your heart.
And the bitter taste of failure in your mouth.

But....
At least you walk away and say...
