Unrequited LoveA Poem by YouoweYoupayYou fancy living by the sea?
Unrequited Love
You fancy living by the sea Or so I've often heard Riding horses, sunset glee All of which sound quite absurd..
Endless green reflects the skies Amazes your eyes And sings your spirit back to life? Or so foretold your uncle's wife.
The sea is not a Cello tune Not big-hearted nor forgiving Not more quenching than desert dunes Not a reverie for forgetting Tongue-slips, faces, and fractured moons
The sea turns grey and dreary Swallows ships and pirate dens Reassuringly and on the contrary Waters swarm with vile fins Of vile beasts and mourning whales That die ashore of mortal sins
Summer days are of no name Salt and bitterness and complaints Of women with hair stubbornly tamed
Nights are lit by fidgeting stars That find no solace in guiding the lost Your breath would stick in humid bars And rents with hurtful, rising costs Only to be able to hear a far But unchanging, callous howl
If you could manage To fit your thumb in a keyhole Or give white the name black Then be my guest And join the line Of waiting for the sea to love you back.
