Fifty-Five

And then Stacy saw that the earth below was rising to meet her. After a moment, she realized that she must be descending. The rainbow had become brighter and brighter and now she was being wafted down to the base of it. She wondered if it was possible that she would end up beside a pot of gold. The colors were glowing so brightly around her that it was difficult to keep her eyes open. She felt her feet alight upon a bumpy surface and the string gradually unwinding around her. She squinted her eyes open and found she was surrounded by a blinding gleam of gold. She reclosed her eyes and decided to just wait for a moment. Hopefully, the shining would abate somewhat. With her eyes closed, her ears seemed to catch the tones of voices in conversation. She turned her head, trying to pick out from whence they originated. "Hello?" she said softly. "Is there someone there?" There was no response and she thought that if she really wanted an answer, she'd probably better speak a little louder. But she really wanted an idea of where she was before making any noise. So she slid one eye open a tiny bit. The glare seemed to have lessened somewhat. She let the other eyelid raise slightly and found that by shading her eyes with her hands and opening them a little at a time, her vision began to adjust to her surroundings. Her first impressions were definitely of a pot of gold. She was surrounded on all sides by a bright yellow glow and when she looked up she saw the rainbow fading into the white sky above her. As she brought her head back down, she began to find her surroundings to be familiar.
