Forty-Six

Another concussion reverberated soundlessly through the water and Guy found himself in an ocean teeming with life. The sun was pouring down through the depths and everything was brilliantly illuminated. The floor of this new sea was covered with stones of all sizes. Seaweed drifted all around him, some close to the ground while some appeared to be brushing the surface. He passed wonderingly through this world, suddenly vibrant with energy and color and movement. Sponges were scattered among the rocks, some attached to stones while others drifted aimlessly. Oysters and clams were clustered in groups, here only a few and there as many as twenty or more. Jellyfish floated by, occasionally trailing over his head or shoulders, but with no violent reaction. Eels swam between his legs as he stood gazing at the spectacle around him. There were fish of so many shapes, sizes and hues; he recognized few of the many different species.. A couple of goldfish swam by. They looked like ones he had seen in bowls except that they were bigger than his head! He was feeling overwhelmed by the abundance of life around him when the same soundless force rippled through his environment and once again everything changed.

It was somewhat of a shock to find himself no longer under water. It had been quite some time since he'd stood in the open air. Regarding his surroundings, he found himself on a mountainside. Most of what he saw around him was bare rock, except for one large weeping willow tree, not far away. He could see the peak rising from where he stood; and realized he wasn't very far from the summit. And there were other mountains all around. Then he heard a buzzing sound and shortly after a large dragonfly flew into his sight. It was bright green with golden highlights and sparkled as it maneuvered to and fro. Then it landed on a rock nearby and perched there, motionless. Guy was captivated by the veins of its wings and how they reflected the sunlight. He looked to the sky. Yes! A bright yellow sun was hovering over the scene and the day was hot. For this Guy was grateful as found himself still shirtless. And now dragonflies were swarming in from all sides. He felt something on his foot and looked down to see a centipede traveling across it. Suddenly the mountainside was teeming with insects and bugs of all kinds.  A mosquito landed on the back of his hand and he watched it intently as it drilled for a drop of his blood. He heard a squirring sound and observed some katydids occupying the rock that the dragonfly had vacated. The buzzing of the bees made him wonder what they'd be doing here with no flowers in sight. Moths were flapping their gauzy wings and he thought he saw a few locusts flying towards the tree. He felt an itching on his knee and looked down in time to see a tiny black dot vanish as it jumped away.

He felt a push and was now standing on a wide open plain of tall yellow-green grass. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and once again there was a tree not far away. This one wasn't a willow but what he thought of as just a regular tree. Tall with lots of branches and luxuriant with foliage. And chimpanzees hanging from the branches and dropping down to run playfully among the grass. A kangaroo was sitting placidly not far away, picking grass with its paws and pushing it daintily into its mouth. There were a couple of other trees off in the distance and one of them seemed to be surrounded by giraffes, plucking their meals from the branches. He began walking in that direction in order to get a closer view of these gentle creatures. There was a large boulder off towards another tree and as he proceeded he saw it begin to move in the corner of his eye.He turned his head in time to see a hippopotamus rise to its feet and begin to amble towards him. Something dropped from the tree he was heading for. Again he turned his head and saw a sloth slowly slide down a giraffe's neck and then roll off its back onto the ground. He heard grass rustling near his feet and looked down to see a herd of guinea pigs excavating the earth nearby. He was watching them while pondering the idea that all these different animals didn't seem to belong together in one landscape. Then he heard a pounding sound and looked up to find two bears loping past the hippopotamus going in the opposite direction. Staring at the bears a yapping sound broke his concentration and the hippo stopped moving completely as a small Pekingese dog rushed up to it barking wildly in a high pitch. Guy burst out laughing and as he did there was another soundless explosion and change of scene.

And now he was in a clearing in a dense forest.  He was standing with Splog and the woman he'd encountered when he first came here.
