One

Eric was sitting on the beach in the twilight. It was still light enough for him to turn the pages of the history book he held on his lap and be able to read the captions beneath the myriad of pictures with which the book was lavishly illustrated. His parents had bought him the book, at his request, as a kind of Thank You to him for doing so well in his first year of high school.  Before the celebratory dinner for his straight-A year, he had asked if they could stop in a bookstore to find something special. With his mother wandering in the science section and his father looking at books of art, Eric had been drawn to the history aisle of the store. His favorite course had been an overview of world history and here he became intrigued by books on the French Revolution and the Civil War, which he knew should be called, technically, the American Civil War or the War between the States, and then he came upon a book of the most influential people who had ever lived. Skimming through sections on Napoleon and Abraham Lincoln, he had decided that this should help him spend a rather interesting summer. He was bringing the book to show his parents when he found, staring at him from the top of a pile of books on a table at the end of the history aisle, a large white book with an open eye filling the cover.

the piece is way too much reading for a singular paragraph. Break it down, it is way too much data to read in one paragraph.
