The Scientist (Part Two)A Story by WatcherInSilenceSuddenly, a meteor shower gushed from the sky above. Erupting flames
of light glided over his head, as sparkling rays joined the electrifying
symphony that began to unravel before his eyes. The scientist, both shocked and
stupefied by the resulting scene, was left baffled in his place. The man was
left quaked by the intensity of the spectacle, as pyres exploded left and right
in a euphoric blend of light. His eyes had even come across a few shooting stars
that added glitter to the mythical portrait. There it was, the moment he longed for, the unfolding of a
beautiful natural sight that would quench his thirst for knowledge, and satisfy
his desire for truth. Yet he felt nothing. That feeling of satisfaction, that sensation
that everything had fallen into place, just like the jigs of a puzzle, still
haunted him. He drew a smile upon his face. It was a forced quirky line that couldn't even fool him. So he chose to cry instead. Warm tears shed from his big eyes, and
slid over both cheeks before crashing down hard on the floor. His passionate and
unjustified sorrow exhumed the remorse he carried, and liberated his free
spirit from the world. He lost touch with his surroundings; a numb feeling took control of
his body, and he lay unconscious on the ground. He felt his soul drifting between time and space before finally
evaporating into the unknown. He couldn’t see a thing; for he had succumbed
into darkness so deep it only allowed him to feel things around him. The scientist then attempted to move his right hand in order to get
a better sensation of his surroundings and track his location, but it was as if
he was floating in midair. He then repeated the movement, only this time with his left hand. And
once he started feeling the emptiness that surrounded him, he sensed a burning
heat underneath his body. He quickly reacted by moving his hand away, but the heat turned
into a warm feeling that inhabited him. Then, in a swift movement, he laid his
hand on his chest. The fire inside him grew more intense, and it brewed within
him. He gripped his shirt so tightly he could feel the beating of his heart. A heart
that, for a long time, had forgotten the meaning of passion and intensity. For all his academic success, all the achievements that crowned him
as one of his generation’s most successful researchers, all of it could not
take away the pain of a lost passion that had marked scars in his heart. And today, these wounds grew deeper, and resurfaced to answer the
calls of his aching heart. A life lived for one’s self always lacks compassion;
it is an empty pit waiting to be filled before it completely dries up and
crumbles. His life, so often showered with success and personal gain, had lacked
passion, love and direction. Along the way, he had lost sight of what was truly
important: a truth that beckoned within his heart. An ultimate desire to serve
others and carry them. A desire so strong that once it was left unfulfilled, it
came back to haunt him and plague him in sorrow and irresolvable pain. And on that night, as he watched his soul search the confines of
the immense space, looking for that prophecy that had gone unnoticed for the
better part of his life, blinded by his self-drive and overshadowed by his
personal success, he realized that the fire inside him consumed what was left
of his former self. Once a wicked man with no real intent and a lone desire for
personal satisfaction, the truth he had spent nights searching for in the stars
burned brightly inside him. And once it touched him and filled his heart, he
was reborn and rose from the ashes that had piled over his soul for many years,
and deprived him from any form of passion. The scientist awoke. The night was at its darkest, and there was no sign of the explosive parody that had taken place before his unconsciousness. Was it a dream? He wondered in silence. But the sensation he
gained, the certitude that the truth had given him during his journey into the
open space prompted him to take action and set on a quest for what had truly
been missing in his life. The next day, as the sun graced the lands, he had taken off his lab
coat, given up his past motives for money and fame, and dove into a whole new
world…a world of books, words and enlightenment that had gone missing, the last
piece to his unfinished puzzle. He would spend countless hours and days, isolated in a corner,
seeking a truth more powerful than his, from a world of thought that he had
left unexplored in his past life. He had finally come to realize that what he was looking for was not
out there, it was in him. And so his quest for passion, his thirst for
knowledge burned vividly by the day and restored, bit by bit, that missing part
of him that had embarked on an untold expedition before bringing back the light
to him. © 2013 WatcherInSilenceReviews
