Neverland

Neverland

A Poem by Alexander Dillon
"

A poem about loss but also belonging.

"
One familiar and melancholy pop-song
Struck a deep and discordant heart-chord:

"I am orphaned."

Feeling not quite an adult, but no longer a child,
I do not know my place in the world.

Parentless.
Homeless.

Fantastical images of a home for lost ones
Captures my attention like never before.

Strange stirrings of kin-recognition as I close my eyes
And see the familiar faces from childhood films.

With bittersweet acceptance of who I am,
What I've become, of my new community:

Orphaned. Lost Boys.

"Neverland is home to lost boys like me and lost boys like me are free. Neverland I love you so, you are now my home sweet home. Forever a lost boy at last."

My parents divorced when I was young and during those important years I was raised primarily by my grandmother. I can't even begin to imagine what it would have been like living without someone to raise me let alone being homeless as well. The message of your poem is very moving despite the dire circumstances within it. But you do give a bit of hope. Thank you for sharing your poetry with us Alexander.
