Taught to PleaseA Poem by WanderingJane
Everyone told her, "Don't stray off the path"
but they did not understand however, she was a good girl Taught to please She followed the path, every twist and turn she kept up this act with a smile on her face They must have caught her staring too long "Don't stray off the path" they said She hid her tears from sight and put on her fake smile She had been wearing it all her life and continued on They did not understand when they looked off the path they saw danger and enough to be satisfied when she looked off the path she saw adventure and beauty The physical pain grew an ache in her chest of the desire to stray off the path but she was taught to please maybe if she explained herself she would be safe and visit every now and then "Don't stray off the path" they repeated The pain only intensified She was thrown into depression morning the life she never had One day something clicked she was taught to please so she waited for her chance she leaped off the path and never looked back She knew what they were saying She can already hear them "She should not have strayed off the path" "What a shame" They would say She was taught to please but it was time to find herself and that she will never find on the path She knew now that they wouldn't understand and she knew now that she made the right choice off the path she ran straight into herself
