The Story Of Erica, Full Time Lesbian Junkie & Part Time Human

The Story Of Erica, Full Time Lesbian Junkie & Part Time Human

A Poem by A. V. Madison

It always starts small
not speaking unless
she was spoken to
not leaving her room
unless she really had to
falling away from reality
and anyone but her
parents could see

"it was just a joke"
the kids all said
“we know you ain’t
really sleeping in
someone else’s bed”
but it was true
she wasn’t sleeping in her bed
she was sleeping in Sally’s

And she was there because
her parents found out
that their daughter had a girlfriend
she wasn’t straight
so they kicked her out
now Erica’s smoking
she’s drinking
she’s dying
it started out small but things like
this grow bigger

it started out small like a wave in the ocean
Erica’s getting sick from the cocaine
ended up big
dead body on the carpet
OD, the police said
Sally visits her grave and she whispers
“Now you ain’t smoking,
now you ain’t drinking.
Weren’t the girl that I fell in love with.
It started out small, but things like this,
they grow big.”
