I suffer from insomnia, and this is what goes through my mind when I lay myself down in my bed at night, knowing I won't sleep.
The cold black stare from the world around me is enclosing, and I don't have the emotional strength to fight it off- and I let it devour me.
Firstly, it grips my ankles, twisting me around inside of my head. Please, let it stop, I think to myself, praying that I may be able to fight it this time, though I've been unable to in those many times before. It snickers a sly laugh that makes me anxious and frightened.
Secondly, it begins to stab it's way into my skin. I quake in fear, staring out the window at the many homes that are gifted to be sound asleep whilst I'm wrestling a soulless soul. It crawls slowly up my legs, that are thrashing about- pounding on the mattress trying to fight off the disease. I tell myself I can do it- but inside I know I will end up surrending myself to the disorder once again.
Thirdly, it takes a hold of my torso, slurping the very life that is now in shattered remnants out of me in the scariest fashion. It's enjoying my mental pain, I just know it. As it slithers up inside of me, I waant to scream out in frustration. But it's all over before the minute ends.
Possibly the most nightmarish piece I've ever written.
Plus, a thank you to all my devoted readers. You guys all mean a lot and I wouldn't be here without you. Thanks.

I suffer too, so I feel you in this. Too active brains shall always. The thing with insomnia is, acceptance, on each and every moment. Just accept you can't sleep, go read/write/watch tv, do something what makes you calm...all to avoid thinking of sleep. And even when it's late, you did had your relaxed moment. You rest then more than that you "think you never will be asleep" just a tip... try to get earlier every day 1 our to bed, and get up 1 hour earlier too. How hard it will be, you can fight it, really. To get in your normal circle again. Good luck dear,
E.L.

I suffer from insomnia. I don't have it like you describe though, I just can't stop thinking and thinking turns to worrying, and then I'm pacing around the room. Ugh. awesome poem, maddie. I loved it.
