Indentured Fortitude

Indentured Fortitude

A Poem by Jennifer Hopkins
"

Old.

"
I am not bound by my tears
Or the sickness in my head
But by the light that shines in
Through unfamiliar window panes
And by the meals that are ready by six,
Every
Single
Day.
I am bound by clattering swing set chains in family-oriented parks.

I have a little girl wandering around
In my head.
And she's asking for the time.
But really she wants to know how much longer.
She writes bad poetry
And fumbles a bewildered finger over the shutter button of a camera,
Far too often.
Staring at the world through the strands
Of the hair that covers my eyes,
She giggles,
For she can make the blurs that are people
Whatever she wants.
She is the unhealthy singer (songwriter).
She does not understand
How binding obligatory hours are.
Or how I am closed in between blue skies
And perfect family portraits.
Like a rock and a hard place
Where not even her bad poetry can save me.

She has been pulling us through
Worlds of family vacations and honor-student grades
Which detain me in my sorry
Everyday
Routine.

It maybe "old" but well worth the read.

excellent insight on the person inside... you're expected to excel and you want to now, you can't turn that off.. at least you have your poetry which are pretty amazing, not bad at all in any way! "she really wants to know how much longer"... gosh, I have asked that times before, I know this feeling of wanting to get out, but you can't, this has become life. we all have to find our own way of finding relief, happiness.. we have different chances that arrive.. sometimes you create them subconsciously...
