I noticed

A Chapter by Rebekah Smith
"

I love something old taking on new form in my mind.

"
It’s 11:25 and Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" is on. I’m listening to the song, and my brain suddenly awakens to another context of hearing it. So this tune is one that is fondly remembered, always incites a head bob and my voice joining with that oh-so-catchy chorus " but he’s also listing of a string of girls that he has.

“I’ve got a girl, named Daisy, she almost drives me crazy…”
“I’ve got a girl, named Sue, she knows just what to do…”

Now when I was listening, for what I can say is the first time I remember, I though “well, that’s not bloody faithful…you sound like a boastful cheat there, mate. ‘You’ve got a girl named Sue’? But what about the other girl you just named, Daisy? And now you’re saying that it brings you stress?!”
Yeah " I thought into it a tad. But do you know what I realised? I realised that the reason I could usually hear that track, and not focus upon the fickle nature of his words was because I have good morals, and I don’t usually consider the possibility of Little Richard (or anybody) openly singing of his cheating ways.
So many moan, complain and slate the use of certain words, really nitpick at definitions, but the reality is that if you have the understanding that, say, cheating isn’t okay, when you hear music full of pride at being unfaithful your immediate response is to disagree and mentally recognise that isn’t the way you think. It’s not akin to your mindset. So to the people that slate entertainment by saying that it’ll ‘influence minds in the wrong way’, all you need to do is educate those minds. Give and allow children to develop their own morals, beliefs and a strong sense of what’s okay and what’s not, so that they can easily spot the things that they don’t agree with no matter how those things might be disguised (for example, with a catchy tune). It’s as simple as that.
