Respect.

Respect.

A Chapter by Rebekah Smith

Having older people in your life is such a wonderful thing.
Today's not good for me. I called Joyce to chat, and see when she'd be available to visit...her following words inspired me, humbled me, motivated me, and all completely effortlessly. She's an 80+ lady who taught herself to swim at 40, still lives alone in a spotless home despite her ailments, has massive self respect, understanding & self discipline. She told me about myself in irrefutable honesty, and her kind views made me cry. She asks me to forgive my mother, stating that in her opinion, mum was unwell and shouldn't be turned away - but also reminded me of what I forget, that I am allowed to block troublesome people regardless of who they are. Her door is eternally open to me, as it has been since I first moved from my city to a place of hills, cows and difference. I love her. I don't want her to be alone.
Their stories may drag, words mumble and sometimes, old people even smell different. They move differently, do things differently, and it's our duty to respect them and ensure they're valued as they valued others in their youth. Listen to them; there is so much sense hidden in the words of the older generation. Real values, honest love and care.

Gee
Loved this. We as a nation totally disrespect the elderly often even dumping our own families because we can't be bothered. This lady is probably the same age as my my old mum who despite all of her illnesses will not give up on life knowing it is far to valuable and so, so short lived.
Whoring myself now, you might like to read "Half way to Heaven" which is a wee scribble about the pair of us ( ish )
