You're Special

You're Special

A Poem by Rebekah Smith
"

This is inspired by Johnny Cash & somebody I know, let's just leave it at that.

"
I stayed awake and watched you breathin'
I stayed awake, your chest was heavin'
You brown-skinned, true tongued man
Your sleep looked mighty peaceful
And it would be quite deceitful
To say I didn't touch you with my hands.

Well there you slept just by my side
With eyelids closed but arms out wide
And black beard peppered with those little bits of white,
The eyes beneath those lids were fine -
A shade of green I found divine
And the stress washed off your weary body's lines.
It was damned near three AM
And you weren't going to pretend
To be awake and firing on all pistons too,
Because we'd spent some of the day
And in that time I'd heard you say
Without the words, that life had been cruel to you.

You were yellow-bellied, like some kinda fish
A man confined by what he truly thinks,
Yellow-bellied, like some kinda fish
A man burned up by what he truly feels.
