Longing For A Dream

Longing For A Dream

A Poem by Ian Faraway

Walking among the grass

The moon hovering high above

Lighting my way into the woods

As I made my way to the lake within

When I drew closer still

Small blue particles floated round

Whispering intangible words in my ears

As I passed by to reach the lake within

The grass thickened around me

And flowers grew above my head

From life the lake gave to them

But only to be returned at the end

I stopped at the small beach

The lake glowed bright blue

Like the particles that floated about

Feeling me with a sense of wonder

Kneeling down, I looked into the water

Seeing my reflection stare back at me

With bags under my sad eyes

I touched the surface and waves echoed

My reflection changed to a female

The one who broke my innocence

The one who made ice form inside

Rage filled me and I punched the water

The image changed to another girl

The one I loved so much

The one who got away from me

I reached down to touch her cheek

She was gone, leaving my sad reflection

I straightened up and took a step in water

The chill sent goosebumps up my spine

Making a smile cross my lips

I walked deeper into the lake

Until the water went past my waist

The refreshing water filling me with a feeling

A feeling of peace and contentment

The feeling that I thought had died

Under the weight of self loathing and sadness

Only to see every moment in my life around me

As images appeared on the lake's surface

I closed my eyes, allowing myself to feel tired

With out stretched arms, I submerged myself

The water cleansing and rebuilding my soul

So I can finally long for a dream

Instead of living with a nightmare

I understand this poem. I did it in Santa Cruz in 1992. Water can cleanse us. I like the above statement. Hard to release old memory to begin a new journey. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
