Secret Rendezvous

Secret Rendezvous

A Story by Wanda Morris-Jones

Here she comes again- on time as usual- as she pulls into the parking space. She gives herself the once-over in the mirror on the sun visor. Then he pulls into the space two over from hers. They park in the same spaces every week; facing opposite directions. She unlocks the doors for him then fluffs her curled hair.

He struggles to get out of his car as it sits too low to the ground for his bad leg. He shuffles around the back of his white sedan to her white sedan. Envelope in hand, of course. Before opening her passenger door he takes a quick glance around the parking lot. Who is he looking for? What would he do if he saw someone he didn’t expect? As soon as he gets into her car she leans on the armrest to meet him halfway for a kiss.

I imagine their weekly script goes as follows:

He hopes she remembered not to wear a lot of perfume so it does not permeate his clothing. Lipstick is wiped from his lips by her manicured thumb. Her hand loosely rubs along the thigh of his pants. She looks at him attentively but keeps an eye on the slight rise between his legs. It doesn’t grow much but she knows he enjoys the physical attention. She adjusts her body in her seat so she can give him her undivided attention.

He relaxes as he puts his hand on the back of her headrest then leans his elbow on the door. Happily, he asks her if she has been waiting long. She just arrived a minute before him. He asks how her day has been thus far. Burdening him with her problems is something she does not usually do when they meet in person. He asks what she has planned for the day. Does she tell him that she is late for a luncheon? No, because she knows she can be late to meet her girlfriends. Giving him 15 minutes of her time is a small price to pay for the $200 that she gets from him every week. She also receives daily calls from him when he is at the office. She doesn’t really need the money but he insists on giving it to her. She is no fool.

She compliments him on his attire as she straightens his collar. When she speaks to him she calls him honey or sweetie; never by his given name. He sops it up. She is the reason that he awakens every morning. A few more kisses are exchanged and some nuzzling of the neck goes on between the couple. Next, she asks what has been going on with him. This is his only chance to get the stress out of his system. She listens dutifully but only responds when asked. He likes that she offers suggestions that are beneficial to his wellbeing.

Time is up. She acts disappointed and surprised that time has gone by so fast. She kisses him to let him know that he is cared about. No tongue though. He slides the envelope in her purse and she pretends to be exasperated. He tells her to buy herself something pretty for their next encounter. Little does he know; the money that he gives her is used to pay for the new car she is driving. She made a point to get the same color car as his. It made him feel good that she would even think of him when making that decision; that she thinks of him often.

He gets out of her car much easier than his own. Another sweep is made of the lot before entering his car. I am spotted looking out the door. He sees me seeing him. He waits for her to pull off before driving off. Another glance is made at the store as he drives down the lot.

Is he wondering what I have seen? How long have I been standing at the door? I wanted to wave at him seeing as though it will be a weekly occurrence. Maybe he will come into the shop one day to size me up; ask me questions. If so, he will have to purchase something before I talk. And I would then ask about his secret rendezvous.
