Main Street

Like the pioneer days
blazing trails over the unknown

Following goat paths led by ancient aliens

Paths of least resistance

University Avenue

starts in Saint Paul

goes North through Minneapolis

then to farm lands beyond

A main artery in my life

we all have one of those

Road my first real bike on it,

wiped out, skinned my knees and elbows

lucky I didn’t scar my head

My father drove us

from midtown to the burbs on it

then forever taking it South

to the University of Minnesota

where on the first day

got accosted by a biker chick,

you know her,

looked like Jane Fonda

acted like Hatchet Face,

who made fun of my last name,

“Horse S**t,

what kind of name is that”

those days,

if your name wasn't

Smith or Anderson

you were some peculiar freak

Got pulled over once by the cops

six squad cars swooped down on the car I was riding in

guns drawn, lights flashing, looked at me hard

“naw he ain't the Baby Face hoodlum where after”

Put the guns away,   drove off,   didn't even say hello

Drove my mother south on that road

many times,
to her work,

she would always smirk

when we timed the traffic lights green all the way there

I do the same, that path leads me to my work place still.
