Darkness

She sat up to look at me. She was a silhouette dark like her surroundings. Her soft magnificent hair was slightly disheveled and no less mesmerizing even though the dark hid it’s detail. A glimmer shone from her eyes even through darkness, it filled me with a warmth that I could hardly understand. She was clothed only in the blackness of night and silky sheets that we shared. She was a beautiful creature, one that I did not own, but one I would fight to a bitter end to protect. Her hand moved slowly towards me and my face became tingly in excited preparation for her touch. Closer and closer. My heart began beating a little faster than I would have wanted it to. It’s as if it were going the first time she’d ever laid a hand on me. Only inches away, it seemed like an eternity. I closed my eyes and braced. A moment passed, then another. I opened my eyes to nothing but darkness.
My heart burned for a moment but not from heat but instead the icy sting of betrayal. Why would my mind do that to me? Why would one dying of starvation dream of a glorious feast only to wake up still starving?
