Aware

D. H. Lawrence 1885 �"1930

Aware

Slowly the moon is rising out of the ruddy haze,
Divesting herself of her golden shift, and so
Emerging white and exquisite; and I in amaze
See in the sky before me, a woman I did not know
I loved, but there she goes and her beauty hurts my heart;
I follow her down the night, begging her not to depart.

I thought this would be appropriate for tonight...An all-time favorite of mine.

i did catch a glimpse of the moon tonight, and yes its perfect timing. there is something so marvellous and mysterious about the full moon and no wonderit inspired poets, writers, and story-tellers throughout the ages. thanks for sharing this. it's exquisite writing.

I adore Lawrence. He had so many wonderful poems like the one quoted in GI Jane, A Wild Thing. And who could forget "The Snake", a truly great masterpiece of verse. Of course he's much maligned for his bawdy side and novels like Lady Chatterley's Lover but even John Donne wrote some pretty risque verse from a much earlier time period and he was the beloved Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. One of my favorite writes by D.H. is the introduction to Pansies. He had a brilliant mind.

I did some graduate studies on the Moderns.... he is by far my favorite. His take on life, poems, essays, and novels is as close to Biblical as i have read... (Except Eliot, who is on another plane altogether.)

I love Eliot too. Love song has always been a favorite. The Waste Land and the children's book, Macavity the Mystery Cat. I'm also a huge fan of anything Kipling and IF is one of my favorites by him. So many wonderful words to read.

Well my first two thoughts are competing with each other for prominence Vol. Firstly, it's a bit saucy for the time and secondly, it's a bit saucy for the moon!

Sounds the type who got away with wearing reuses because he wore a sword! He'd probably fit right in today! 😃

I'm sure you know Lawrence... Lady Chatterley's Lover" His poetry is brilliant at times, and just okay at others. One of my top five poets of all time...

Yeah, I know of him, but haven't read any since we were forced to at school, which could put you off anyone.
Think of 30 hormonal moody kids taking turns reading something they don't want to read and you get the picture.
It took me until my forties to give that Shakespeare fella another go. It was actually not bad. I remember wondering why that stuff didn't catch on!

I don't have to imagine... it was my job for decades... but I knew what I was doing... I had 'em driving fifty miles to readings in Nashville... extra credit if they read something they wrote. Thought I'd get fired that time twenty-seven of them showed up on Erotica night... eleven parents. No extra credit needed after that. Those sweet little ole ladies were GRAPHIC!
