SPACE OF TIMEA Poem by VolThe sere of August has laid down a ponderous weight. The sedge has withered from the lake and the tall horses in the pasture down the road gather under a wilted copse. The air is thick enough to shimmer the image in the hot morning sun. A quarter mile away a few pools of shallow water gather in the rocky bottom of Carters Creek, while the herd weighs the difference between the fire on their backs and the distance to a few cool swallows so far away.
Their lust for speed and open land, like the desire that burned my youth has cooked away in the space of this time. At our best, we would go anywhere we wanted to dance with a light-footed girl until she made sweet moan, and laugh in the wild eye of La Belle Dame Sans Merci. © 2024 VolReviews
