INTRUSION

A Poem by Vol

The conversation rolls in

like the moon's red shoulder

between those two hills.

"You're getting old.”

“I know, and everything that ever

happened seems like yesterday."

the smell of wind off the gulf,

someone's smile, a word,

"Do you remember that time…?”

“Yeah, as good as it gets.”

“Her frown has become permanent…”

“I don't want to think about it.”

I get about this far

before I try to shrug it off.

the yellow moon drags itself

up, disappears behind those clouds.

"It's not so bad, I'm happier now than ever.”

“Yes, but you're old, not like those

skinny-dipping times at the lake

when the moon was white…”

“We laughed all night

and built a fire."

But, with age comes less of the risks that skinny dipping you risked and you still get to say "Been there, done it, bought the t shirt!", without having to do it again, ever! 😊
Life, in my opinion anyway, is all about balance. When we were young, we had fun, but we're so naive and now we have less fun maybe, because we hope we know a thing or two more.
When we were young, we wanted it all, but hopefully with age, we realise that we don't really need it all, and anyway, if you had everything, where the hell would you put it?
And the more we hobble along that road to our final destination, we are sure glad to have gave up on those everything's that would have weighed us down even more, and we're just happy with the odd bench or two along the way, to take the weight off and rest up a while, as we enjoy the view that younger us was too busy to even notice! 😊
