GO HOME!A Poem by VolOh, yes, the air was crisp, and there was a lot of it, too. From the overhang it was a good five hundred feet down, rolled across twelve miles, they said. Here on the edge, a scrubby pine eked a living from what looked like a bushel of dirt, and something in that tree attracted a million wasps to hover in the needles and climb deep into the cones; I watched a long time and could not see what they thought was down in those depths. I did, however, keep my distance. When I squirmed out to the lip of the mountain, one of the red bees landed at my feet, and a second later a black one jumped him; they wrestled and rolled around, I grabbed for my camera, but they tumbled off the edge before I could fire a shot. I shrugged and the black one came back up, and groomed himself. Back at camp, we built a fire and cooked some grub, talked late, until I pulled the night in with me and snuggled down for an outdoor sleep. Just before I dozed off, an eerie coyote howl wailed in from the trees answered by five more doing a little Yip! Yip! Yip! Yip! Yip! Yip! chorus in an arc fifty, maybe a hundred feet out from my head. “Hey, this is east of the Mississippi, You don’t belong here, I thought,” But, upon further reflection… neither did I. © 2023 VolReviews
