A Poem by Vol

The bag contains $26.95 of life.

Wild birdseed I buy very autumn

against a snowy winter and

pour into a big plastic bucket

out on the porch near the feeder,

a covered, plywood platform I

mounted between two persimmons

outside my kitchen window.

I watch the bright cardinals

flutter away from the bully

blue jays like fat politicians

who make everyone move aside,

so they get the best bits while

everyone else watches impatiently

from branches a few feet away.

The nuthatches hop head down,

chickadees bounce from limb

to limb

whistlebuzzbuzzbuzz

to wait their chance, and keep

watch for the bureaucrat big boy

thrush, tohee and sapsuckers

who tumble in with little regard

for whose supper they steal.

Every word true of and about the glory of watching and hearing the birds. I love them, can watch for hours, But also aware they are, like cats, present in our lives because they're wild cadgers who love regular meals! Yout skill at likening them to those less feathered creatures who only sing to be noticed are equally (and more) political l or pseudo social plagiarizers! Plus, are usually tone deaf.

One of the best things of having bird feeders is getting to see the avian hierarchy in action, which ones bully their way to the front and become instantly dislikeable for their bully boy tactics and which ones wish they were bigger to put them in their place.
It's probably even more important than ever to feed your visiting feathered friends, as people look to cut back on the cost of living crisis now, so kudos for that.
We have a few feeders here that we can watch our friends from the comfort of our coffee cups and kitchens and it just makes the mornings better to see the little fellas appreciating the efforts and paying for their breakfast with a song.
They brighten the place up and make noise people actually like hearing... Unlike so many other species. (yes, I mean humans) 😊
