An Alcoholic's Lullaby

An Alcoholic's Lullaby

A Poem by Voice

An Alcoholic’s Lullaby

He downs another bottle of booze

Liquid confidence

Every drink makes up for the last

Clearing his conscience

Pain? It no longer exists

It has been replaced by alcohol induced rage

He is ready and willing to take it out on anyone…everyone

Who gets in his way

Even his 5-year-old niece

She is crying for her mother

But mommy isn’t there

The veins in his head pulse

“Shut up!!!” he screams

The girl only cries harder

Fear disables her tear’s off button

He removes his belt

And it becomes a part of him as he beats her

He was drunk

And there is no excuse!!!

The girl escapes from the corner she cowers in

Runs to her room and locks the door

Her legs and lower back numb

She collapses on the bed

Black and blue are the new colors of her skin

She lays there barely covered by her nightgown

Tired and weak she closes her eyes

The same song playing in the background like every other night

His screams, things breaking,

And the refrigerator door as he reaches for another beer

Slowly she drifts to sleep

As she listens to

An alcoholic’s lullaby

O poetry, the great equalizer of human pain...

Nothing allows it out quite the same. Nicely done, especially using such restraint, keeping it tasteful... only lightly touching the surface, but it is enough.

Oh my god, I almost started to cry. that was a heart ripping poem. and its horrible that someone should go trough that when they are so young, or even at anytime of their life...
great poem=)

Oh god. You're in my prayers. That has got to be so traumatic. I am sorry that you had to deal with it. I could feel your pain through your words, so I can only imagine how it must've felt. Nice write, and keep reflecting.

The tragedy bout alcoholics is the people round them become the victims all to often... a sad piece but a real look into the harsh reality of this disease. I think sharing your tale will help others, I applaud your courage.

Wow.. such sad and anger stirs when I read this ... having a mother who drank heavily for quite a number of years.. and having been the object of her anger ... I know that pain and it is horrible.. takes many years to heal those wounds.. I am still working on it! Terrible that anyone has to go through it.. but such is reality and life for many! It is great that you get those emotions out.. many can relate.. and it does help to reach to others that have had similar experiences.. your experiences will make you a survivor and so strong if you direct that pain in the right manner.. writing is one really great way! Thank you again for sharing.. =)
