An Alcoholic's Lullaby

An Alcoholic's Lullaby

A Poem by Voice

An Alcoholic’s Lullaby

He downs another bottle of booze

Liquid confidence

Every drink makes up for the last

Clearing his conscience

Pain? It no longer exists

It has been replaced by alcohol induced rage

He is ready and willing to take it out on anyone…everyone

Who gets in his way

Even his 5-year-old niece

She is crying for her mother

But mommy isn’t there

The veins in his head pulse

“Shut up!!!” he screams

The girl only cries harder

Fear disables her tear’s off button

He removes his belt

And it becomes a part of him as he beats her

He was drunk

And there is no excuse!!!

The girl escapes from the corner she cowers in

Runs to her room and locks the door

Her legs and lower back numb

She collapses on the bed

Black and blue are the new colors of her skin

She lays there barely covered by her nightgown

Tired and weak she closes her eyes

The same song playing in the background like every other night

His screams, things breaking,

And the refrigerator door as he reaches for another beer

Slowly she drifts to sleep

As she listens to

An alcoholic’s lullaby

very heart breaking and soo soo soo sad, as you know this puts
a lump in my throat, this is another part of memory lane for me
how ironic,, living through the teens whith your two other poems
and now reliving my baby girl that is now free out of me,, sorry you
had to go through this, and for all the others.. liberation... is the
word for you now!! you are the sweetest.... keep being
you and keep writing about it!! :-)

this story is one that plays all too often in society. i really appreciated the gritty-realism employed, which is usually glazed over in most accounts..

I commend you for having the courage to share your experiences with the world. You are not alone even though I'm sure when it was happening to you, if felt as though you were. I hope others who read your poem find their own voices, and hope that those who abuse read this and realize how much hurt they inflict on the people they supposedly love. Great write as usual.

Very sad story. But you always get the truth of the matter in your writing. Great job!

This was very deep and heart wrenching. You are a very strong person to survive that situation. Everything in one's life makes them who they are today, even the horrific factors. Keep writing, you'll go far.

Being raised by an alcohol definatly gives us thicker skin doesnt it? Its so good for your soul to get it all out, and youve done it well girlfriend! Very touching, thank you for sharing such a tender piece, and a thank you from my five year old self that remembers a similar life!

Well depicted, I take it as a true story as its intensity is above average. Then I saw yur note as well.
Another fantastically written poem from a very talented girl! You'll go far.
