An Alcoholic's LullabyA Poem by Voice
An Alcoholic’s Lullaby He downs another bottle of booze Liquid confidence Every drink makes up for the last Clearing his conscience Pain? It no longer exists It has been replaced by alcohol induced rage He is ready and willing to take it out on anyone…everyone Who gets in his way Even his 5-year-old niece She is crying for her mother But mommy isn’t there The veins in his head pulse “Shut up!!!” he screams The girl only cries harder Fear disables her tear’s off button He removes his belt And it becomes a part of him as he beats her He was drunk And there is no excuse!!! The girl escapes from the corner she cowers in Runs to her room and locks the door Her legs and lower back numb She collapses on the bed Black and blue are the new colors of her skin She lays there barely covered by her nightgown Tired and weak she closes her eyes The same song playing in the background like every other night His screams, things breaking, And the refrigerator door as he reaches for another beer Slowly she drifts to sleep As she listens to An alcoholic’s lullaby
