If I Forget

If I Forget

A Poem by Samantha ~virginpoet

If I should ever lose my memory
please remind me of the things I love

If one day I forget to tell you
I love you I hope you'll still feel it
in the embrace of my touch

My love please remind me
of my need to write poetry
so I don't forget how to breathe

If one day I forget to tell you
I love you I hope you'll feel it
in the breath of my kiss

If one day I forget to tell you
I love you I hope you'll see it in my eyes
in that certain longing gaze

My love please remind me
to rub your back til you fall to sleep
and tell me how I find peace
in the beating of your heart

Tell me the things I never
would think I could forget

Like the first time you said I love you
or the moment you asked me to marry you
even the birth of our child

Remind me of all the little things
of all the passion and love we share

Please my love don't let me forget
the things that are so deeply embedded in bone
that I will suffer from the tip of the tongue complex
speak them to me softly in an I love you tone

But please love let me forget
all the bad memories and heartache

Fill me with all the happiness
we have shared

Tell me the first word our son spoke
and don't lie and say it was Dada
cause as I am now we both know it was Mama

What ever you do don't let me fade into
the darkness so deep that nothing exists
in my mind and in my heart

You are a story teller a poet
whisper to me of all the things
you and I would never want to forget

My love please remind me of us

Tell me the story of ...

This was beautiful, it was the will to fight the building tension of the tragic disease that is Alzheimer's but it was more than that it was the only request that ever counted for I would never want to float in the darkness not knowing what your touch feels like. This piece touched my heart, great collaboration you two.. you are indeed two souls united as one.

Interesting and captivating subject matter, and it was taken at an interesting angle as well. Unfortunately the format and punctuation left the poem broken in places, perhaps reflecting the disease itself, but when the subject is further explored this is eliminated as a possibility. The use of anaphora (repetition) helps with the theme of the work as a reminder, but the phrases themselves could be better constructed as stand-alone sentences as is the case with /I love you I hope you'll see it in my eyes/. Finally, the conclusion of the poem with mixed media is something that I particularly enjoyed, however it could have been better delivered with an image not just of old age, but of the trials of love through senility more specifically.

So beautiful! I love this! If I could write like this like I once was able to, I don't think I'd ever need to breathe.
