only she knows

only she knows

A Poem by Danielle Asher
"

oh the thought of new love. Trust it? yourself?

"

A toe dips in the pool to feel the temperature of the water

Too cool or maybe too warm

Not really sure what to believe

She looks up

Sees the sun in all its brightness

She has not seen another with such light

Counting the stars

Watching them fall

Glide through the night sky

Distracted by the door

If he will walk through

Take a chance

Driving toward something

Colors she believed only she could see

Spread through the sky

Will he see?

Learn her

Know her

Teach her

And only she knows if she will allow it.

Ah, this is light and wistful and lovely about such an important issue. I'm not sure "trust" is the ultimate point, tho' I am certainly empathetic to the process of loving, of allowing love with the "other." (I know you didn't actually use the word "trust," -- it's in the review before mine, so I guess I'm addressing it dually. ;-)) The reason I question "trust," is because I feel love of the other becomes a shared extension of who you are, and when that reaches a certain thoroughness of insight -- into the whole dance of self and other -- you simply SEE what it is you are feeling affectionate about, or desirous of. Ultimately, for instance, I don't have to trust you to love or desire you. If I see myself clearly enough, I will probably see you clearly enough. Then let the chips fall where they may, because Time is slowly shredding us into Infinity anyway. We "err" on the side of courage, if we don't "see" it all, 'cause our fears are illusions anyway. Maybe all I'm mulling over is what Kristofferson's lyric said: "Freedom's just another word for 'nothin left to lose."

I guess your whole charming poem is an exercise in calibrating "seeing" with "trust." Rich psychic terrain.
