A Story by Danielle Asher
"

egh, just a little something

"

She rushed in the door dropping her groceries on the kitchen table. Keri runs down the narrow hallway to her bedroom. The bag she was carrying drops to the floor and her jacket gets thrown across the room onto her rocking chair in the corner that already has a pile from this weeks clothes on top of it. She leaps onto the bed and sees the silver rectangle that holds all her life’s secrets and commitments inside. Grabbing it she slides the clasp and presses the button at the top.  Impatiently her mind is wondering what he is going to say today. She has been thinking of it all day. Keri feels relieved to finally be home and able to spend some quality time with her magical pc.

Keri leaves the computer to warm up as she goes into the kitchen to pour herself some water and as she opens the refrigerator she contemplates a glass of her favorite Irish Cream. Deciding to take this one on alone she grabs her glass filled with water and heads back into the bedroom.

She scoots her a*s cheek by cheek up against the pillow so she can balance up against the wall while balancing her computer on her lap. She leans her back up practicing good posture and laying her head against a pillow letting out a sigh.

Keri first decides to check her general email. The anticipation of knowing if he wrote her made her palms begin to sweat and her heart beat a little faster. ‘What is he going to say today?’ She wondered. It could be over in no time. It is probably nothing worth even thinking about, she thought to herself.

In her email she sees she received something from the Sexual Assault Coalition. Suddenly her face is plagued with a frown. Everyday she wants to forget. Each morning she wakes up she knows she wants to turn her incident into something good but she just longs for a day when it does not sneak up on her. As Keri begins to read the newsletter and all about the event coming up this weekend, she reads of stories of women that were also raped. She knows they suffer a similar healing but she wants to know if they took as long as she is to move on. When will she be ready to go out with a new man and trust again?  ‘Is this why I enjoy his emails so much,” she thinks to herself. She wonders if he would ever become more than text on a screen.

Her excitement has been let down from when she first turned to her lap top but she typed in her favorite website. ‘I can not turn back now,’ She thought hoping something he wrote would wipe the uneasiness back from off her face. Clicking on her inbox she felt a flutter of nervousness.  Going through the list, Jillian, Georgina, Raquel, Lisa but he was not there.

Bummer for her; what a weird day and age we all live in.
We all can get into these online places of disappointment, because of the
verification of self that we get though correspondence.
Strange that this is the way that we all communicate with one another now.

Another great thirtysomething installment, Ya know, your pieces remind me of some of Janet Evanovich's stories! I also liked the a*s cheek scooting, although then I started laughing because I thought of a dog dragging its butt across the rug.
