I am sure she gets told that all the time

I am sure she gets told that all the time

A Poem by Danielle Asher

                                 1/29/08

I dreamt of the beautiful woman winning prizes
Receiving gifts from other beautiful empowered woman
Everyone was so happy, learning, growing, achieving
I kept spilling a pale of soapy water
Again and again and again
It would flood the floor
And the beautiful woman kept mopping and mopping
The spots she washed before the downpour went untouched by my disastrous clumsiness

After the beautiful woman had humbly shown me all her winnings
I walked away discreetly trying not to show my disappointment for being unseen by all
My consolation was a couch with my mother offering nothing substantial
My sister gave me a leather braided whip that she thought I might want to hold on to
She too showed her achievements of the day as I was shrinking deeper and deeper into
uncomfort with Joan

“Tell your friend that she is absolutely gorgeous,
but I am sure she gets told that all the time.”
